The first instant tickets for the West Virginia Lottery were sold on January 9, 1986. More than 1.5 million tickets were sold the first day. Since the start, the West Virginia Lottery has provided more than one billion dollars to help improve the lives of all West Virginians. This figure includes profits transferred to the state's general fund and video lottery profits. Lottery proceeds and profits from the video lottery gaming fund have been dedicated to programs for senior citizens, education and tourism.

Some things made possible by the West Virginia Lottery:

• Senior Centers, home health care, transportation and other services

• Handicap-accessible facilities at Hawk's Nest and a new swimming pool at Beech Fork State Park

• Nearly 40,000 classroom computers for West Virginia students

• New schools to bring state of the art laboratories, classrooms and equipment to students.

Excess funds are deposited into the State’s Excess Lottery Revenue Fund, used to provide West Virginia students with college scholarships and to back bonds for economic development endeavors.
