The first Scratcher tickets for the New Mexico Lottery were sold on April 27, 1996. For several years, Lottery profits were divided 60 percent for the public school capital outlay and 40 percent for the Lottery tuition funds. Later, the proceeds were split equally between the two programs.

In June 2001, all Lottery profits were earmarked solely for the Lottery Tuition Fund (Lottery Success Scholarship). Through the Lottery Success Scholarship Program, every New Mexico high school graduate (or GED recipient) who wants to attend a New Mexico public college or university can get their tuition paid as a result of profits from the New Mexico Lottery.

From the Lottery’s inception until June 2004, $246.5 million has been raised for New Mexico Education. The games offered by the New Mexico Lottery are as follows:
