New Jersey was the third
state, after New Hampshire
and New York, to authorize
and create a state Lottery
in the election in November
1969. The first 50¢ Weekly
Lottery ticket was sold
December 16, 1970. The
Lottery was an instant
success with the public. The
gross sales for the
Lottery's first full year,
Fiscal 1972, totaled more
than $137 million.
In May 1975, the New Jersey
Lottery introduced the
nation's first online daily
numbers game, Pick-it, a
game in which players could
go "online" using computer
terminals to choose their
own numbers. In 2002, the
New Jersey Lottery continued
to improve on its games
enabling the Lottery to
achieve its first $2 billion
sales year. The record sales
secured the New Jersey
Lottery a place among the
most successful and
efficient state lotteries in
the country. In February
2004 the New Jersey Lottery
was the first lottery in the
world to venture into the
realm of “e-games” when it
unveiled Cyber Slingo,
played on the Internet.
Entering the fourth decade,
the Lottery still maintains
its lofty position as the
fourth largest source of
revenue for the State of New
Jersey after income, sales
and corporate taxes. The
department programs
supported by the Lottery
include school nutrition,
the Department of Education,
Higher Educational Services,
Department of Human Services
and the Department of
Military and Veterans’
Affairs totaling more than
$7.7 million in fiscal year
2004 alone.
All of the New Jersey
Lottery winning numbers are
drawn from traditional
lottery ball machines. The
New Jersey Lottery offers
the following games:
