When the Nebraska Lottery began, it was the 37th lottery in the United States. The first Scratch ticket went on sale in September 1993, followed by Lotto ticket sales in July 1994. The Nebraska Lottery dedicates proceeds from lottery sales to beneficiary funds such as the Education Innovation Fund, the Nebraska Scholarship Fund, the Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund, the Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund, and most recently, the Nebraska State Fair.

A total of $231,233,137 has been transferred since the Nebraska Lottery began operation. Lottery proceeds are being used in many ways to help people and projects in Nebraska. Among these efforts is the Nebraska Scholarship Fund, which has supplied grants to more than 13,000 students at 42 institutions of higher education across the state. These institutions include all the state's 14 public 4-year and 2-year institutions, 12 private for profit institutions, and 16 private independent colleges.
