In November of 1986 Montana became the 23rd Lottery state in the nation. Since the Montana Lottery sold its first ticket in 1987, it has transferred more than $113 million to the State of Montana. The Montana Lottery is an enterprise fund, which means the Lottery receives no funding from the state of Montana but rather generates money for the state General Fund.
Lottery profits go towards many different programs that benefit the citizens of Montana including the following: The Teachers Retirement Fund for the purpose of holding the line on or reducing property taxes. The state's General Fund, which provides money for state programs, which do not have dedicated revenue sources, such as education, health, and public safety. The Office of Public Instruction School Equalization Aid Account, which funds Montana’s elementary and secondary public schools. The Board of Crime Control to fund administrative costs associated with juvenile detention centers in Montana.
