The first Minnesota State Lottery tickets were sold in April 1990. From the Lottery’s inception through November 2004, sales exceeded $5.2 billion with more than $1.2 billion paid to the state. Scratch tickets have consistently accounted for the majority of lottery sales, totaling 56 percent in fiscal year 2004.

The state constitution requires that a minimum of 40 percent of lottery proceeds be distributed to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and the remaining 60 percent distributed to the state’s General Fund. The Lottery had a record year in 2004, returning $100.7 million to the state.

In total, the Minnesota Lottery has contributed $350 million to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $769 million to the state General Fund. The games offered by the Minnesota Lottery are as follows:
