In November of 1986, Kansas residents voted in favor of the establishment of a lottery in Kansas. Just 200 working days later, the Kansas Lottery was on a roll selling instant tickets throughout the state. The first week of sales were in excess of $7 million. Since the beginning of the Lottery in 1987, lottery ticket sales have produced $779,274,129 in revenues for the State of Kansas. Fiscal year 2004 was a record year of $224.2 million in sales of which $70.2 million was transferred to the state.

The Kansas Lottery is a self-funding and self-sustaining state agency and no tax money is used to support any Lottery operation. The purpose of the Kansas Lottery is to provide entertainment for the players, as well as support for the state of Kansas by generating revenues for economic development, prison construction and juvenile detention facilities construction.
