The California State Lottery
Act was approved on November
6, 1984. The Act provides
that at least 34% of the
Lottery revenues must go to
public education. The
California Lottery's mandate
is to provide supplemental
funding to California public
education on all levels from
kindergarten through higher
education, plus several
specialized schools.
Since 1985, the California
Lottery has contributed more
than $15 billion to public
education. Lottery funds
last year provided school
districts with the
equivalent of 11,517
full-time teachers and the
ability to purchase 2.9
million textbooks. In fiscal
year 2002-03, revenues from
the Lottery generated $124
per pupil, or $1 billion
total and supported over 8.1
million students in
California’s public schools.
